So only seven ingredients remain: silica provides for abrasion, fluoride prevents tooth decay, a surfactant foams the tabs on contact with saliva, soda regulates the pH, vitamin C stimulates salivation, cellulose serves as a filler and menthol provides for fresh breath. Toothpastes contain almost three times as many chemicals, which in their low concentration are considered harmless and effective.
