  The beneficial effects of milk thistle were already known in the Middle Ages. The fruits of the thistle contain the active ingredient silymarin, which protects the liver from the harmful effects of medication, alcohol or pollutants and is intended to help it detoxify and regenerate faster. The plant can also be taken preventively and is considered harmless.

   

  The liver plays an important role in the metabolic cycle: it converts substances such as sugar or alcohol into fats and detoxifies the body. However, if the liver has to deal with too many poisons such as alcohol or environmental toxins, it can be weakened and its function restricted, which can also have a negative effect on other organs. Chronic inflammatory diseases of the liver are treated with milk thistle. Typical diseases of this type include:
