L-methionine 500 mg 50 capsules

  • Prevention of urinary tract infections
The sulfur-containing α-amino acid L-methionine is essential for the human body and must therefore always be consumed in sufficient quantities through food. Her main tasks include the construction of various protein molecules and the synthesis of the sulfuric amino acid L-cysteine.

A healthy adult should consume about 21 mg of L-methionine per kilogram of body weight per day, although certain illnesses and accompanying circumstances may lead to an increased need.

In particular, existing allergies, liver disorders or urinary tract infections increase the methionine consumption of the organism, which is why it is necessary to ingest corresponding amounts of food. Dietary supplements can also be used to meet an increased need, as otherwise depression, allergies and exposure to pollutants can cause a lack of L-methionine.

Since the metabolism of superfluous methionine is linked to the formation of sulfuric acid, the urine excreted through the kidneys is acidified, which enables the use of the essential amino acid for the therapy of certain diseases. On the one hand, urine with a pH of 4 to 6 can optimize the effects of many antibiotics such as ampicillin and prevent the formation of kidney stones. It is also possible to inhibit bacterial growth in the case of cystitis, since most pathogens cannot survive in an acidic environment.

    Prevention of urinary tract infections
Since it leads to acidification of the urine, among other things, it can be used effectively to prevent bladder infections, since the E. coli, which are mostly responsible for cystitis, cannot survive in an acidic environment. A study carried out in 2002 showed that the additional intake of methionine-containing preparations can significantly reduce the tendency for urinary tract infections, which can be particularly advantageous for young women1. They suffer from cystitis much more frequently than other parts of the population, which is why they can particularly benefit from taking methionine-containing food supplements. It can also effectively reduce the risk of re-infection.

    Methionine brightens the mood
Other areas of application of the essential amino acid are depression and Parkinson's, since L-methionine is involved in many metabolic processes in the brain. It stimulates the formation of the mood-enhancing neurotransmitter serotonin and, if appropriately supplemented, can increase the mobility and activity of Parkinson's patients, since it restores certain chemical balances and can therefore also reduce symptoms such as tremors, mood swings and sleep disorders. Polish researchers came to this knowledge last year, which is why L-methionine is increasingly being used in the treatment of degenerative neurological diseases
