What is really good for the intestines?
PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS - WHY BOTH SHOULD BE PART OF YOUR DIET.

If you haven't holed up at home in the past few years and have even ventured into a bookstore or on the internet, you've probably noticed one thing: how important it is to keep your good and bad gut bacteria in balance.

Billions of bacteria live in your body. Together, these bacteria make up your microbiome, a complex ecosystem that is very important to your body. It ensures that your digestive system runs smoothly, your immune system stays strong, your hormone levels are balanced and your brain functions are supported. Although the bacteria that make up your microbiome are found all over your body and on your skin, the majority of them live in your digestive system — which is also where about 80 percent of your immune system resides. This also means that your gut and especially the good bacteria that live in it, have an important role to play. Since you were born, good bacteria have settled in your intestines, where they support your body in a variety of ways. However, when your gut ecosystem is going through changes - because you're stressed, eating poorly or leading an unhealthy lifestyle, being ill, taking antibiotics, etc. - your risk of developing health problems increases. This upsets your balance between good and bad bacteria. If left unchecked, bad bacteria can cause inflammation and disease throughout the body, eventually leading to leaky gut syndrome or psoriasis.

Experts agree that your gut flora should consist of at least 85 percent good bacteria and 15 percent bad or neutral bacteria. Maintaining this fragile balance isn't always easy, and sometimes we need a little help in the form of supplements. If you want to promote a healthy intestine and a functioning digestive system, you should therefore use probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria that help your body fight off infection and keep you healthy. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are fuel for the good bacteria, keeping your body healthy and the bad bacteria in check.

    THE ROLE OF PROBIOTICS
The term "probiotic" has Greek roots and means "for life". The UN's World Health Organization defined them as "live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in the right amount". (2) Probiotics help boost your immune, digestive, and neurological systems, improve skin health, drive out bad bacteria, yeast, and other fungi, and produce key nutrients like vitamin B12, vitamin K2, and butyrate. In other eras of our history, our diets were naturally rich in probiotics. Our ancestors ate foods that grew on good soil and were naturally rich in good bacteria; they also ate a lot of fermented products that were high in probiotics. Today, most people don't get enough probiotics from their diet. They also eat too many highly processed foods or those that are high in antibiotics, GMOs, or other substances that kill the good bacteria in your body.

    THE ROLE OF PREBIOTICS
Prebiotics are indigestible fiber compounds that probiotics feed on. The best known of these are called oligosaccharides or polysaccharides; however, this is just one of many groups of chemical compounds that can be found in high-fiber foods. Once ingested, prebiotic compounds pass through the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract without being digested because the body cannot break them down. They then move on to the large intestine, where they are fermented by the intestinal microflora. During this process, the prebiotics are used as a nutrient source for the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. (3) So, prebiotic foods help balance out the bad bacteria and toxins that live in your digestive tract. When the probiotics in your gut metabolize the prebiotic fiber compounds, they produce short-chain fatty acids that improve gut health and help regulate electrolyte levels in your body.
